We are living in a beautiful time. We have the most wonderful database of collective knowledge and resources available to us since the dawn of time, and I would like to think that it is making us all healthier and happier. I am proud to say that I am on board with the yoga loving, crystal wearing, essential oil using tribe. If you are not yet a believer, well, give those things a try with a smile, or at least smile at the rest of us. In the meantime, enjoy this interview with Rebecca Bland of Sunfire Essentials!
🌹I love love love essential oils and am always interested to hear people’s stories on how and when they discovered EO’s. Can you share with us your story?
☀️I was working a really high stress project and I wasn’t coping well. My moods were up and down, I was impatient and short with coworkers and my relationship was starting to suffer as a result. I was about to go to my doctor and talk about getting on some anti-anxiety and anti-depression meds when my friend Allison suggested I try essential oils. I bought three bottles: Serenity, Balance and Elevation. I used them topically and also had a necklace diffuser. I noticed an immediate change!! I was able to cope with the stress much better, my moods were more even and my relationships improved. I was totally transformed!
🌹Do you have a morning routine using oils to get an energizing start to your day?
☀️My mornings are a little more chaotic than I would normally prefer!! But I never leave the house and start my commute without some Balance on me! I put it directly on the back of my head, kind of behind my ears. I also make shower fizzies which I like to use some mornings. I add different oils like Lemongrass, Wild Orange or Citrus Bliss to baking soda, citric acid and witch hazel. Instead of putting them in a bath, I put them in organza bags and hang them on my shower head where the steam can activate the baking soda. The fizzies are a great way to start the day and make the entire house smell great!
🌹We all need to unwind at the end of a long day, what advice do you have?
☀️I am a professional unwinder! I often use my large diffuser and put in a little sleep blend. I start it about an hour before I want to go to sleep and I never have a problem getting rest. I use Serenity and Breathe. The Serenity blend is perfect to help unwind at the end of the day! It contains tons of oils which really help me relax! I have asthma and sometimes laying down makes it more challenging to breathe. I use the Breathe blend frequently to help keep my airways clear.
🌹You have a shop on Etsy, Sunfire Essentials, that carries the cutest gemstone and lava diffuser bracelets! For our readers who are unfamiliar with what diffuser bracelets are, can you tell us more about them?
☀️Thank you! The bracelets I make all have a lava stone component to them. The lava stones are porous, which help to carry the EO of your choice. I usually add one drop directly to the lava. Sometimes, I put a different oil on each of the lava stones to get a little blend going! Each bracelet also features one or more gemstones, which can also help with specific issues/ailments. For example, I make a howlite diffuser necklace. Howlite is known to be a calming stone, which can calm an active mind and provides stress relief.
🌹How did you come up with the name Sunfire?
☀️When I decided to start as a wellness advocate with doTERRA, I knew I wanted to also make jewelry and build a business. I needed a name which was a little different. I went through a few iterations but my fiance suggested Sunfire and I just new it was the one. I think he got the idea from a video game!
🌹Crystals and gemstones have become very popular in the past few years, I am a huge fan myself. Did you get into crystals around the same time that essential oils came into your life? I noted in one of the photos on your instagram that you have the key book, Judy Hall’s The Crystal Bible!
☀️I do really like crystals and gemstones! I did start learning about them when I first started using essential oils. I wanted to learn about the various gemstones and how I could incorporate them into the jewelry. It’s a little overwhelming, but I’m learning slowly but surely! The Crystal Bible has been a lifesaver!
🌹Do you have any upcoming events?
☀️I am hosting an essential oils for beginners class on Sunday, March 26 at 1:00 pm in Brookfield, IL at Brixie’s Bar and Grill. I love Brixie’s, they have a great selection of craft beer and an awesome kitchen. Their burgers are the best! Anyone is welcome to join us. Here is the event information:
Essential Oils Class
🌹What projects are on the horizon for you?
☀️Right now, I’m filling out craft show applications like a crazy woman! I don’t really know what I’m doing yet, so I’m collecting fun displays as I find them. I figure I’ll just go and do my best and learn from my mistakes! I’m also going to expand the line into different types of bracelets and adding some necklaces to the line. For the oils, I have a goal to host at least two in person events per month. I also want to perfect my shower fizzy recipes so I can add those to my product mix. I’m also planning my wedding on top of all of this!

I adore art, don't you!?
There is something so fantastic about discovering a (new to you) artist whose work brings you joy, following their career, and when you are fortunate, owning their art.
Today I have an artist that you need to know, and I believe you will love her and her art as much as I do! Nicole is from Illinois and owns Hot Javva Studio. Nicole has been a lifelong artist who really burst onto the scene professionally in 2009. Over the years I have been blessed with some unique commissioned pieces from her. We did a fun interview together that I am sharing with you below.
❤ I adore your philosophy that everyone should be able to own original artwork, where did this thought come from?
🌷I feel like art is inaccessible to most because of the cost. Owning original art is a luxury. The prices of paintings reflect the materials, time spent(this includes all the practice and failed paintings that preceded the work) and the cut given to the gallery. I'm not saying the prices aren't justified, but most people can't invest. I'm trying to meet customers in the middle, because I think an original work imbued with magic and love is something everyone deserves.
❤ You have traveled throughout Europe. Did you get a chance to speak with the artists there? What was your impression of them vs. American artists?
🌷I met many talented street artists in Paris, Salzburg, and Zurich. I enjoyed watching them work; there were so many wonderful scenes to work from. In Paris in particular, students and more seasoned artists were set up along the Seine, at the Eiffel Tower, outside the Notre Dame. I got the impression that creating art and enjoying the beauty of things is not treated as a luxury or a dream. It is valued as a part of life. Here we are too busy busy busy to slow down and paint until we are retired.
❤ How has art helped you to step out of your comfort zone?
🌷I challenge my shy self to meet other artists and be an active participant in our local creative community.
❤ Flowers seem to be a favorite subject of yours; is there therapy to you in them?
🌷I enjoy painting flowers, the colors are vibrant, there are so many varieties. They take me back to my childhood, spending time in the garden with my Grandma. From a business standpoint, floral paintings are the most searched/purchased subject.
❤ You're a Mom. Have you found that your art or creative process has changed since becoming a parent?
🌷So much! For one thing, I can't paint whenever I want and leave my supplies out. My son once used my very expensive acrylic to paint my bedroom door with his hands. Our landlord was not happy.
❤ Do you involve your children in your creative process?
🌷They help me research. We go on nature walks, visit galleries, museums, any place that might inspire new ideas. They give me honest feedback about my work. My son gave me the idea to add frogs and dragonflies to my Lilypad Leap painting-a detail that I'm really happy with and get a lot of compliments on.
❤ To someone who wants to start out painting, what advice do you give?
🌷Let go. Be a child. Make mistakes. Don't judge yourself. Focus on how you feel, not what you make. Know that regular, consistent devotion to your craft will help you develop.
❤ Are there any new projects that you have in the works that you would like to tell us about?
🌷I am illustrating a children's book about a chicken. (Nicole has given me more information on this great project, but it's a top secret partnership for now, look for more information later!)
I just partnered with Art of Where to create wearable art, accessories, and home decor.
I will be a part of the Prairie Plein Air Competition and Show in Schaumburg, Illinois this May-June. This is such a fun challenge for me, to work with changing weather and lighting, chat with people while I paint, minimize my supplies to make them portable, and appreciate nature.
